Joyce started teaching in New Jersey, spending 3 years teaching high school mathematics. She then moved to Houston Texas and taught high school mathematics for 3 years. She moved to Denver in 1983 and has lived here ever since. She taught one year at the UNC Lab School and then returned to school full time to get her master’s degree. She then taught 22 years in Adams County, 17 years at the high school level and 5 years at the middle school level. She has extensive experience at all levels of mathematics, including 10 years teaching AP Calculus. Joyce’s philosophy on teaching mathematics is to use hands-on activities to help them discover their own meaning and understanding of the discipline. Her favorite activates include skiing and snowshoeing in the winter as well as hiking and camping in the summer. She does most of these activities with her beloved golden retriever Kozmic. She also Jazzercises 4 to 5 times a week to stay in shape.
